Swallowtail Alpine black


            (Papilio maackii)





               The wingspan of the spring generation is 70–87 mm, of the summer
            generation 70–125 mm. The wings are wide with more or less long
            tails  widening  towards  the  end,  their  color  is black  and  densely
            pollinated with green, blue-green or golden-green scales. Males are
            characterized by fields of androconial hair-like scales on the front
            wings. On the front wings, below, closer to the outer edge, there is
            a vague transverse strip of golden-green scales, which continues on
            the hind wings in the form of a rather narrow clear strip. Pupa green
            or brown.
               In  Russia,  this  species  inhabits  Primorye, Amur  Region,  South
            Sakhalin  and  about.  Kunashir.  Outside  of  Russia,  the  species  is
            widespread in Korea, China, and Japan. Summer generation butterflies
            can fly far from their breeding sites - to Eastern Transbaikalia, to the
            Northern Amur region, to the mouth of the Amur.
