wrapping up in ice. But eating and sleeping always go
first,’ grumbled Snezhik ,climbing up into my hands. He
looked into my eyes and added softly,’ You are different,
you’re a good girl, thank you.’
‘Thank me? Why?’
‘You’re capable of being happy and admiring things.
Today we’ve sent loads of good snowflakes to the snow
storage area. If only people could rejoice their hearts
once a day at least, not being afraid to love, admire or
wonder, the world would feel much happier. Although
you people are weak creatures with little magic in you,
much depends on you, on the power of your thoughts
and emotions. ‘
Up the road we saw a woman and a child. The wo-
man’s eyes looked tired, her lips set firm. The little
boy gazed in wonder at Snezhik - children are able to
see things sometimes hidden from adults- and laughed.
‘Look, mum, it’s a pussy cat, a snow pussy cat.’
Snezhik complained, showing his hurt pride. Howev-
er, he smiled at the boy and threw a handful of hoarfrost
on his hat. The mother glowered at me and gave a pull at
her son’s arm. ‘What’s up?’
I smiled at such a young, but so anxious mother and
said,’ It’s frosty, frost on your lashes, as if you were the
Snow Maiden. So beautiful! Happy New Year! Let your
wishes come true!’ Her eyes flashed, the cheeks turned
pink and the lips curved into a smile. ‘Thank you. Happy
New Year to you!’
