Owl, Snowy owl
(Nyctea scandiaca)
Body length — 60 cm, wingspan — 154 cm. Most adult males have a small
amount of brownish streaks and stripes on the head and wings, some males are
completely white. Females always have a dark transverse pattern on the ventral
side and markings on the back. In young birds, only the facial disc remains white,
and the dark pattern is stronger. The beak is black, the plumage of the paws is
white. The eyes are yellow.
Food objects are small and medium-sized mammals, less often birds.
In the Sakhalin region, it occurs during periods of seasonal migration and
winter. It was noted throughout the territory of island Sakhalin and the Kuril
Islands: Shumshu, Paramushir, Onekotan, Matua, Simushir, Anuchina, Shikotan.
There are known encounters of owls on the island Sakhalin in the summer season.
