Bat, Ikonnikov’s
(Myotis ikonnikovi)
Body length 37–43 mm, tail 30–42 mm, forearms 30–33 mm, wingspan
19–22 cm, slightly protruding along the base of the spur. The coloration
of the back is dark brown with grayish yellow, slightly reddish tips of the
hairs; the abdominal region is brownish gray. The edge of the leathery
membrane is attached to the base of the outer toe. There is no epible. The
ears are large, the wings are wide, blunt. The ears are covered with special
earbuds — tragus. The tragus is straight, long, narrow, and pointed.
It feeds on flying insects, catches them, flying low over the ground and
forest rivers.
The species is common in Japan, Kazakhstan, Korea, Mongolia,
Russia. Lives in the mountain taiga forests of northeastern Asia. Brood
colonies in tree hollows, rock crevices. Winters in various underground
shelters in Sakhalin and Kunashir, within the Aleksandrovsky, Okhinsky,
Nogliksky and South Kuril districts.
