Bittern big
(Botaurus stellaris)
The the back is covered with blackish feathers with a characteristic yellowish
edging. The bird’s head has a similar coloration, the belly is buffy. The tail is
yellowish-brown, with a pronounced black pattern. The beak has a light yellow
color with numerous dark specks. The average body weight of an adult male can
range from 1.0 to 1.9 kg with a height of up to 65–70 cm. The wing length of the
male is about 33–34 cm, of the female — 30–31 cm.
Food prefernces are fish and aquatic insects.
Inhabits the entire territory of about. Sakhalin. During the nesting season, birds
were observed on the shores of Aniva Bay, Busse Lagoon and Lake. Nevskoe, in
the valleys of the rivers Susuya, Viakhtu, Valovskaya and Dianovskaya. During
autumn migration — at Cape Slepikovsky and at Piltun Bay. Flies to the South
Kuril Islands. General distribution: Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, North and
South America.
