Introduction

Take a look around how rich our homeland is! The specific climatic

conditions of the only Island region in Russia allows us to observe
amazingly beautiful flowers and extraordinary trees. Many of them
are hidden from human eyes in thickets of tall grass, like, for example,

Sakhalin’s Lily Glena. Flora of Sakhalin and Kuril Islands is a

fascinating uncharted territory, which we invite you to explore with us
through the legends and myths of the rarest plants of the region.
This publication is an attempt to combine the Red Book of the Sakhalin

Region with myths and legends of different peoples. Leafing through its

pages, you will learn a lot about the secrets that the flora of our islands
has kept for a long time. What is the meaning behind the name «fern»?
The petals of which plant become transparent when it rains? Why did

Rhodiola rosea receive its healing properties as a gift from the gods?

How many kinds of Venus’s shoe grows in the Sakhalin region? From
what tree did the deities create the ainu people? Where did dandelion
                    come from?

You will find answers to these and many other questions in our

collection, addressed to a wide range of readers. It will be interesting
both for schoolchildren who are just beginning to explore their native
land, and for numerous tourists who will meet the living legends of

Sakhalin during their wanderings through the mountains and rivers,

warm lakes and the coast of the cold Sea of Okhotsk.
