Gull ross’s
(Rhodostethia rosea)
Small seagull of graceful constitution. The body length is 34 cm on
average, the wingspan is 84 cm. The plumage is mostly white with a
pink tint, the mantle and wings are light gray. There is a narrow black
stripe around the neck. The tail has a characteristic wedge-shaped shape.
The beak is black. The legs are red.
In summer, it feeds mainly on aquatic and terrestrial insects, crustaceans
and molluscs. In the sea it feeds on fish and various invertebrates.
In the Sakhalin and Kuril waters, the rose gull flies in early-mid
November or later, spends the winter here and stays until May, although
in the third decade of May, adults usually appear at nesting sites. Small
colonies nest in Taimyr, the coasts of Greenland, in the Canadian Arctic
Archipelago and on the coast of Hudson Bay.
