Once a tribe of Gauls came down from the mountains and decided to
spend the night at the foot. However, even before the sunrise, they woke
up from the inexplicable music that poured from the sparkly golden lights
on the plains. The Gauls were scared, they thought that they reached the
end of the earth and reached the sky, on which the stars shone. And they
called these brilliant lights «astragalos» — the stars of the Gauls. The
ancient people did not know that they confused the plain with blooming
astragals with a starry firmament.

One of the chiefs of the tribe had a
daughter. She was not dark-skinned, like
everyone else, but light-skinned, therefore
they called her the Pale Face. Once the
enemies attacked, they knew that all the
men of the tribe had gone on a campaign,
only the girls remained in the camp, and
therefore hoped for an easy victory. But
the girls bravely fought the enemies.
And so all the Pale Face’s friends died.
Only she continued to fight against the
hated enemies. They got angry and shot a
hundred arrows at her at once. The pale-
faced, struck by them, fell, and in that place
a beautiful white-stemmed tree grew. And
only the wounds from the arrows of the
enemies gaped with black spots.
