Lilium glehnii
Cardiocrinum glehnii
(Lilium glehnii Fr.Schmidt)
Cardiocrinum Glehnii is a perennial plant (up to 2 m in height), with a large bulb
(up to 12 cm in diameter) formed by the bases of leaf petioles. The stem is hollow,
smooth, straight. Basal leaves up to 20 cm in length, the same length and their petiole.
Stem leaves are cordate with reticular venation. Flowers are white (sometimes slightly
greenish), up to 2.5 cm long, funnel-shaped, collected in an amount of 20–30 in a cyst-
shaped inflorescence.
It differs in that it blooms only once in a lifetime (monocarpic). Propagated by
seeds and baby bulbs. Blooms in July, leaves begin to die off in September, seeds ripen
in October. After flowering, the plant dies off, leaving only 1–6 replacement bulbs.
Usually replacement bulbs by this time have 1–3 leaves. Blooms after 3–4 years of
growing.
The number of the species on Sakhalin is small, but in the south of Kunashir in
some places it is still significant, its huge rosettes forming a continuous carpet.
