Lady’s slipper orchid yellow
(Cypripedium calceolus L.)
Perennial plant 25–50 cm tall, with a straight
stem and thick rhizome. Leaves are simple,
whole, 3–4 in number, oval-elliptical, pointed.
Zygomorphic flowers are usually in bunches of
2–3. The lip is up to 3.5 cm long, yellow, with
reddish dots inside. Boll up to 4.5 cm long and
0.9 cm wide.
Occasionally recorded on Sakhalin Island
(Korsakovsky, Tomarinsky, Smirnykhovsky and
Poronaysky districts). In Russia it is sporadically
found in the European part, Eastern and Western
Siberia, to the North. The Caucasus and the Far
East. Outside the Russian Federation it grows
in the Mediterranean, Mongolia, North-Eastern
China, on the Korean Peninsula
Lady’s slipper Palomino
(Cypripedium yatabeanum Makino)
Perennial herb up to 40 cm tall, with a
long thin root. The stem is straight, the leaves
are simple, whole, up to 17 cm long and 8
cm wide. The flower is single, zygomorphic.
The lip is brownish or greenishyellow, often
purple at the base and indistinctly spotted.
The boll is up to 2.5 cm long.
In the Sakhalin region, this north-Pacific
ocean species is found only on the Kuril
Islands: Shumshu, Paramushir, Onekotan,
Rasshua, Ushishir, Ketoy, Simushir, Urup,
Iturup and Kunashir. In Russia it is also
distributed in Kamchatka and the Commander
Islands. The general range of the species
includes Japan and the Aleutian Islands.
