Paeonia obovata or Woodland peony


                                                           (Paeonia obovata Maxim.)




                Large perennial herb up to 60 cm high. Leaves
             are  dull  green,  densely  pubescent,  with  large
             pointed oblong-ovate or obovate leaves up to 10 cm
             long and 5 cm wide. The flower is actinomorphic,
             usually with closed petals, from pale to dense pink,
             up to 5 cm in diameter.
                Distributed in the southern and middle parts of
             Sakhalin Island (environs of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, in
             all administrative regions except Okhinsky), on the
             islands of Moneron, Kunashir, Iturup, Shikotan. In
             the Russian Far East it is noted in the Primorsky
             Territory, the Amur Region, the Jewish Autonomous
             Region, in the south of the Khabarovsk Territory.
             Outside the Russian Federation — in China, on the
             Korean  Peninsula,  in  Japan  (Hokkaido,  Honshu,
             Shikoku).

                                                               A perennial herb with cylindrical root cones
                                                             and  a  twisting,  slightly  purple  stem  60–90
                                                             cm  tall.  Leaves  are  double-compound,  with
                                                             pointed  elliptical  leaflets,  slightly  leathery,
                                                             dense.  Flowers  are  solitary,  cupped,  light
                                                             cream or yellowish, up to 10 cm in diameter.
                                                               Occurs  on  Sakhalin  Islands  (Poronaysky,
                                                             Uglegorsky,      Makarovsky,       Tomarinsky,
                                                             Dolinsky, Korsakovsky, Anivsky and Nevelsky
                                                             Districts), Iturup, Kunashir, Shikotan. On the
                                                             territory of the Russian Far East, it is located on
                                                             the northeastern border of the range, it is found
                                                             in  the  Khabarovsk  and  Primorsky  Regions.
                                                             Outside of the Russian Federation it grows in
                                                             China, Japan and on the Korean Peninsula
