Perennial plant up to 20 cm tall. Leaves are simple,
whole, green, without bluish bloom, 3–5 mm wide, obovate-
narrowly ovate, narrowed at both ends, incisedtoothed
along the edge and with a wide transparent border. The
inflorescence is a complex scutellum with fourdimensional
flowers. Sepals and petals are linear, almost equal in size,

                                               3–4 mm long.
A rare species that grows on the northern border of the
range. It is known from a few localities in the mountains on
the Iturup, Kunashir and Shikotan islands. In addition to the
Kuril Islands, it is found in Japan.

The heavenly deities created the world. They populated the land with flora and
fauna. But soon the gods were saddened that most of the mountainous areas remained
uninhabited, because plants and animals left, preferring warmer regions. Only one
plant decided to stay in remote mountainous places — Rhodiola. For its endurance,
the gods endowed the plant with medicinal properties. Since then, in order to take

advantage of the healing power of this flower, everyone who wished to climb high up
the mountains after it, and Rhodiola did not languish alone.

                                                      Rhodiola rosea (golden root)

                                                                        (Rhodiola rosea L.)

Perennial dioecious plant. Aerial stems are up to 20–30
cm high, thick and glabrous. Leaves are simple, alternate,
sessile, tapered to the base. The upper leaves are 3–4 cm
long, 1.5–2 cm wide, the lower ones are almost two times
smaller. The inflorescence is corymbose, dense. The flowers
are actinomorphic, the sepals are fleshy, light yellow-green, the
petals are linear. Orange-yellow stamens exceed the petals.
The species is scattered across Sakhalin Island (in all
administrative regions) and the Kuril Islands. In Russia, it
is found in the north of the European part, the Caucasus, in
Western and Eastern Siberia. Outside the Russian Federation it
is found in Europe, Central Asia, Mongolia, China and Japan.
