Taimen, Hucho taimen
(Hucho taimen)
The taimen has a torpedo-like muscular body, covered with dense small
scales, a broad-forehead flattened head from top to bottom with a large mouth
dotted with sharp, curved teeth, a powerful elastic tail. The articulation of
the lower jaw with the skull behind the vertical of the posterior edge of the
eye. The teeth on the jaws and palate form a continuous strip. Coloration
before spawning: back brownish to black, sides silvery with black cruciform
spots. During spawning, the belly, pelvic fins and lower lobe of the caudal
fin are bright orange-red.
Widely distributed on the territory of Russia. It lives exclusively in fresh
waters. Inhabits all rivers of the Urals and Siberia from Ob to Khrom; the
basin of the Amur, the Kama and Vyatka rivers, was discovered in Pechora.
There are in the rivers flowing into the Amur estuary.
